The University of Arizona is committed to ensuring worker protection through the systematic identification, evaluation, and control of risks that cannot be eliminated through engineering or administrative controls. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program outlines the procedures, responsibilities and training required under Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (29 CFR 1910 Subpart I) to ensure compliance and safety.
EHS provides support for all key requirements for the PPE program:
- Assessment and documentation of PPE assessments and requirements
- Providing PPE recommendations and support unit-level purchasing
- Training and support for all affected workers
Program Scope
This program applies to all workers who may be exposed to hazards that are controlled, whether in part or in full, by the use of PPE in University-controlled workplaces.
PPE required includes but is not limited to: eye and face protection, head and neck protection, body protection, hand and arm protection, foot protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, electrical protection, and fall protection.
PPE Written Program
This written program details the confined space program requirements, roles and responsibilities, and provide templates to support compliance and safety.
PPE Training
Initial, periodic, and annual training are required for any worker required to use PPE in the course of the work. EHS can provide onsite training upon request and supports unit-level training.
Assessments & Recommendations
EHS provides a PPE assessment template that can be completed along with the unit. Additionally, EHS provides a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) template that can be created with EHS to communicate processes and controls, including PPE.
